"Antique Orientalist Painting, Seaside Landscape, Piana Oued Coast, Algeria, Corsica, Maxime Noiré (st"
Large double-sided painting: Calanques of Piana and Algerian wadi on the reverse – French school 1900–1930 in the style of Maxime Noiré. Oil on panel presenting a powerful seascape with red cliffs plunging into a deep blue Mediterranean; raking light, golden reflections on the water, vibrant brushstrokes. The porphyry pinnacles, the alignment of the coves, and the rocky archipelago in the foreground closely resemble the Calanques of Piana in Corsica (red rock, jagged cliffs, shimmering waters). The reverse shows an Orientalist landscape: a wadi with stony banks, a palm grove, and an ochre-pink ksar in the background, under a milky turquoise sky; the brushwork is free, in a warm range of yellows and pinks. Studio painting or by a Post-Impressionist/Orientalist traveling painter of the early 20th century, artist to be identified. Fragmented brushstrokes, nervous impasto, decomposed reflections on the sea; A highly contrasting warm-cold palette (ochres/reds of the rocks vs. blues/greens of the water), construction through superimposed planes; a taste for the effects of southern light. On the reverse, an Orientalist travel painting, a dry atmosphere, simplified vernacular architecture. Part of the landscape and Orientalist movement active around 1900-1930. Dimensions: Overall framed size: 93 x 71 cm. Beautiful carved wood frame, stained brown, decorated with faceted relief motifs in the corners, gilt inner molding; old gilding and patina, minor wear consistent with age. The frame reinforces the Neoclassical/Poussinian interpretation of the panorama. A beautiful decorative and collectible piece: double-sided, the sought-after subject being the Calanques of Piana (Corsica), very likely, plus an Orientalist verso evocative of an Algerian wadi. Ready to hang, generous size, quality frame.
