Vue de Marrakech

Elegant and luminous, this oil on panel by Jean Baldoui offers a refined interpretation of a Marrakech view, one of the emblematic subjects of the artist's work.

The subtly constructed composition unfolds a network of terraces bathed in light, in the ochre and pink tones characteristic of local architecture. Two slender cypress trees, treated in deep greens, punctuate the foreground and introduce a verticality that guides the eye towards the horizon. In the background, the bluish relief of the Atlas Mountains dissolves into a delicately vibrant atmosphere.

The painterly style, free and nuanced, is in keeping with a post-impressionist sensibility in which the rendering of light and atmosphere take precedence. Here, Baldoui captures the essence of a timeless Morocco, in a vision that is soothed and profoundly pictorial.
This work seduces with its chromatic balance, its quality of material and its evocative power, constituting a particularly accomplished testimony to 20th-century French Orientalist painting.

Jean Baldoui, born in Paris in 1890 and died in Rabat in 1955, belongs to that generation of traveling painters who found North Africa a major source of inspiration.

Trained by masters such as Jean Adler, Achille Cesbron and Henri Lebasque, from 1914 he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon d'Automne, joining the official circuits of the Parisian art scene.

Insettled in Morocco, he devoted most of his work to depicting North African landscapes and towns. His work, marked by a supple touch and warm palette, favors atmosphere and sensation over literal description, in a renewed approach to Orientalism.

His work, sought by collectors for its luminous quality and chromatic refinement, is a singular testimony to a modernized Orientalism, imbued with restraint and accuracy
