This sheet presents a particularly accomplished study of an Ionic capital, executed as part of a late 19th-century French academic education. The quality of the line, the precision of the linear drawing and the mastery of proportions reflect an advanced exercise, probably carried out during an internal competition.

The handwritten inscription mentioning a "troisième prix d'émulation" lends the work particular interest, as these distinctions came to reward the best students in the art schools of the time, where the teaching of ornamental drawing occupied an essential place in training.
