A riverside landscape brought to life by a boatman standing in his boat, beneath a monumental grove of tall poplars reflected in the water. The scene evokes the river landscapes of the Saône, the Vienne, or the Aube.

A beautiful composition by Hippolyte Léty depicting a river landscape rendered in a light, gray, and silvery palette. The artist organizes the scene around a wide expanse of calm water, bordered by low vegetation and dominated by a group of tall poplars whose slender trunks give structure to the entire composition.

Their reflections extend deep into the water, forming a second, more diffuse vertical structure that lends the painting a great sense of depth. The sky, which plays a prominent role, is composed of bluish grays, chalky whites, and subtle pinkish hues. The clouds illuminate the background and accentuate the dark silhouettes of the trees.

The boatman, standing in his small boat, is the only human presence. His size provides a sense of scale for the landscape and reinforces the scene’s quiet, contemplative character.

The main group consists of tall riverside poplars, recognizable by their straight, tall trunks standing close together. Their clustered arrangement and their reflections in the water form one of the work’s major motifs. On the left, trees with a more open growth habit accompany the vegetation along the banks.

Through its depiction of calm waters, low banks, poplars, and silvery-gray atmospheres, this work can be compared to the landscapes of Alexandre Jacob, which focus in particular on the marshes and waterways of the Somme. Both painters share a similar taste for vast skies, low horizons, trees reflected in the water, and small human figures discreetly integrated into the landscape.

Hippolyte Léty (1878–1959), a French painter born and died in Vienne. Trained in Lyon and later in Paris, he studied under Tony Zac, Alexandre François Bonnardel, Léon Bonnat, Ferdinand Humbert, and Luc-Olivier Merson. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and developed a significant body of work centered on landscapes, particularly the banks of the Rhône and other French river sites.
