Samson Earthenware Dish With Bérain Design Featuring An Antique, Animated Fountain Scene, Paris 19th Arrondissement
SAMSON Paris – Large earthenware dish with Bérain decoration – 19th century – 38 cm
Large, scalloped earthenware dish from the 19th century, made by the Samson factory in Paris, featuring polychrome decoration in the style of Jean Bérain’s late 17th-century compositions.
The dish features an architectural composition combining mythological figures, female figures, sea creatures, birds, fountains, and grotesque ornaments. The design is organized around a vertical axis, featuring arabesques, foliage, and ironwork motifs in a palette of blue, green, and yellow ochre.
The undulating rim is decorated with floral garlands and gilded foliage, framed by fillets that follow the contours of the dish. This decoration draws on the ornamental repertoire of Rouen earthenware in the style of Bérain, reinterpreted by the Samson factory in the 19th century.
The monogram “L.P.” is painted on the reverse. Dimensions: 38 × 28 cm, depth 6 cm.
