From The Library Of Louis XV's Minister: "the Intrigue Of The Cabinet" Under Henry IV And Louis XIII
Artist: M. Anquetil
A rare copy from the Château des Ormes, with the bookplate of Voyer d'Argenson, Minister of Foreign Affairs under Louis XV, and a great bibliophile, one of the founding fathers of a collection that formed the solid foundation of the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in Paris after the dispersal of his rich library, amassed in his leisure time when he was repudiated by Madame de Pompadour and fell out of favor with Louis XV. His refuge: culture, where a brilliant court surrounded him with friendship. This is what concerns these four beautiful volumes in 12mo, bound in full mottled glazed calf, smooth spines with floral tooling, red morocco titles and volume numbers, red edges, marbled endpapers, with the bookplate of this prestigious library: "The Intrigue of the Cabinet," under Henri IV and Louis XIII, ending with the Fronde. By M. Anquetil, Regular Canon of the Congregation of France, Correspondent of the Royal Academy of Inscriptions & Belles-Lettres, Prior of Château-Renard, & Author of the Spirit of the League. In Paris, from the printing house of Moutard, Printer-Bookseller to the Queen, to Madame, & to Madame the Countess of Artois, rue des Mathurins, Hôtel de Cluny. M. DCC. LXXX. (1780).
