The light and southern colors are perfectly mastered by this artist, Charles Malfroy, born in Lyon but a Provençal by adoption.
The work, in good condition, was executed with fervor in a first sketch in oil on canvas.
It is presented in a beautiful period carved and gilded frame measuring 59 cm by 71 cm, and 33 cm by 46 cm for the painting itself.
It depicts a seaside village, most likely on the shores of the Étang de Berre, near Martigues, where the artist was a frequent visitor.
The work is signed and dated 1891 in the lower right corner.
A French painter, born in Lyon on May 27, 1862, and died in Kremlin-Bicêtre on July 21, 1939, Charles Malfroy belongs to the Post-Impressionist tradition of Jean-Baptiste Olive.
Drawn to the light of Mediterranean ports, he excelled in views of the French Riviera and the Bouches-du-Rhône region, particularly the port of Martigues and the various ports around the Étang de Berre, Istres, Port-de-Bouc, etc. He also painted a few pictures of Venice.
He demonstrated virtuosity in atmospheric effects with a talent for color.
He exhibited a seascape entitled "In Provence" at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1894.
