Object description :

"Joseph Garibaldi (1863-1941) Village Street In Brittany"
The painter specializing in bucolic life in Provence, strolling in Brittany in 1891.
Whitewashed cottages with slate roofs replace the old Provençal streets with low walls and dry-stone houses that the artist painted in his native south.
Whether in Brittany or Provence, the painter of the "tranquil Midi," as the expert Pierre Murat calls him, always conveys in his works a tranquility and serenity that make us want to go back in time and force us to reconnect with the simplicity, authenticity, and beauty of a bygone era.
In his works, there are always anonymous and discreet characters like these two women with traditional headdresses and this cart and its driver who trotted through a village where the spire of the brown bell tower contrasts with the white of the facades of the cottages.
All surrounded by dense green vegetation that the Breton climate favors.
The work is offered in a Louis XIV style frame that measures 60 cm by 68 cm and 38 cm by 46 cm for the canvas alone.
The work, which is done in oil on canvas, is mounted on another canvas and restored by a professional.
It is signed and dated (18)91 lower left.
A rare and original subject for lovers of this great artist.

Joseph Garibaldi exhibited at the Salon des Artistes from 1884 to 1914 where he received an honorable mention in 1887 and a second class medal in 1897. These are mainly views of famous sites and monuments, coastal ports: Cassis, where he painted regularly between 1884 and 1899, La Ciotat, where he was welcomed by Antoine Lumière, Bandol, Sanary and Toulon. But his specialty will remain the Old Port of Marseille. Until 1905, he benefited from the patronage of Baron Alphonse de Rothschild (1827-1905), who, guided by the critic Paul Leroy, who was very supportive of Vollon's students, bought his paintings and donated them to provincial museums. He exhibited his landscapes at the Colonial Exhibition in Marseille in 1906 and received a travel grant for Tunisia in 1907. He was supported throughout the rest of his career by his friends from the Association of Marseille Artists (Étienne Martin, José Silbert and Édouard Crémieux), who were successively at the head of the association...
