"Jules Claverie (1858-1931) Martigues, Young Woman Sitting At The Edge Of The Pond Of Berre"
Imposing and luminous oil on canvas by the Marseille painter Jules Justin Claverie. The work is offered in a gilded carved wooden frame which measures 86 cm by 112 cm and 73 cm by 100 cm without the frame. It is in good condition, only a few cracks from use and small normal restorations for a work of this period and of this size. It represents a young woman sitting on the banks of the Etang de Berre, facing Martigues, the famous Provençal Venice, highly coveted by artists of that time. A very beautiful atmosphere, peaceful, calm, bucolic and anecdotal emerges from this work. A pupil of Dominique Antoine Magaud, Jules-Justin Claverie exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1897 to 1931. He obtained several awards including a 3rd class medal in 1912 and a gold medal in 1923 for An old manor on the pond and Hamlet in Provence. He participated in many regional exhibitions and became a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille. He died in Marseilles in 1931, his tomb is decorated with a funerary monument sculpted by Louis Botinelly representing a reclining young woman holding a painter's palette in her right hand and a branch of laurel in her left hand; the bust of the deceased is placed on a pedestal.
