Henry Saint-clair (1899-1990): Elegant Men In Deauville

Artist: Henry St Clair (1899-1990)
A fabulous and luminous oil painting on hardboard with a boat varnish (a technique favored by Toulouse-Lautrec), depicting early 20th-century bourgeois society on the beach at Deauville. Medallion format. Provenance: from the artist's studio. Signed lower left. Visible dimensions: 46 x 35 cm. A microcosm of Normandy, the aristocratic societies of the Belle Époque, and seaside resorts! Henry Saint-Clair, originally from Normandy, is a Post-Impressionist recognized as one of the most representative painters of French life on the Normandy coast. He settled in Sotteville, near the charming port of Honfleur. At the beginning of his artistic career, he worked as an art restorer for national museums, notably the Louvre. His creative period spanned from 1920 to 1970, interrupted by the German occupation between 1941 and 1945. He was deeply inspired by the colors and vibrancy of Raoul Dufy's paintings (of whom he was a close friend and the official frame supplier). Saint-Clair was also interested in the pictorial style of Eugène Boudin and studied his work in depth. In Honfleur, he worked for a time in a studio with the artists André Hambourg, Fernand Herbo, and Jacques Bouyssou. His favorite subjects were his family, his loved ones, beach scenes, holidays, and everyday moments, all rendered with a sure hand. Henry Saint-Clair immortalized family scenes on the beach, in vivid colors, along the Normandy coast, particularly in Deauville, Honfleur, and Trouville. Oil on cardboard, the artist's preferred technique, defined his unique way of painting. He paints his characters with tenderness and humor, and his lines and colors are essential. A profound emotion emanates from his canvases, a feeling of life and happiness, as if time had stood still. A vibrant and colorful snapshot of Normandy by a renowned painter sought after by collectors!
