Pair Of Gilt-bronze And Marble Tazzas (cassolettes) – Second Half Of The 19th Century

An elegant pair of French gilt-bronze and marble tazzas (or *cassolettes*) dating to the Charles X period. They feature a pronounced flared shape with refined gadrooning—specifically a radial fluted motif—on the lower section, and a beaded and gadrooned rim along the upper edge. Each piece is fitted with two striking, opposing scroll handles, finely chased with foliate motifs and geometric elements that connect elegantly to the body of the cup. The cup rests on a flared circular foot—also gadrooned and decorated with acanthus leaves or dense fluting—which serves as the transition to the plinth. The base is a visually striking element consisting of a square-shaped plinth clad in yellow Siena marble, characterized by white and amber veining. This marble section is set between two gilt-bronze elements: a smooth upper plate and a lower plinth decorated with horizontal foliage or classical fluting (in relief), serving as a solid support. As shown in the attached photo, the *cassolettes* bear the signature "RAULIN" inside the cup; this mark was discovered during cleaning, appearing as a stamp on the interior of the upper section. Research indicates that this is a creation of the Maison Raulin, founded in Paris on Rue de Turenne; the founder collaborated with his son until 1878, at which point the son, Victor Raulin, took full control of the business. Working under the name Raulin, Victor earned prestigious awards at the Great Universal Expositions in Paris in 1878 and 1889, distinguishing himself through the exceptional quality of his chased and gilded bronzes—featured on both furniture and decorative objects such as clocks, candelabra, and the like.
