"Raoul Duvernon. The Entrance To The Port Of Marseille "
Little is still known about this artist, Raoul Terasson-Duvernon, who was born in Marseille at the end of the 19th century, was trained by Cormon, practiced his art first in the south, and ended up settling in Remiremont in the Vosges where he gave drawing lessons and actively participated in cultural life with his musician wife. Few of his works circulate, however, considering the format of this canvas (100 x 200 cm) we can clearly see the artist's profession. The panoramic format, the fact that about twenty years ago, I had the counterpart of this painting (a view taken from the sailboat representing the bottom of the old port of the same format) leads me to think that it is a commission for one of the many hotels or brasseries in Marseille that have disappeared since the 1960s. A small restoration (a small snag) otherwise good original condition.
