Bacchanal Scene By Jacques Antoine Vallin (french, 1760 - Paris - 1835)
Artist: Jacques Antoine Vallin
Mythological scene with Bacchus and Bacchante dancing, executed around 1790-1800. Despite the absence of a signature, but due to the identical composition, quality, style and period of creation, this pair of works has been attributed to the French classicist painter Jacques-Antoine Vallin (1760 - Paris - 1835).
Vallin follows in the footsteps of the bacchanals and gallant pastorals of Jacques-Philippe Caresme, but in a more neoclassical, even historical style, in tune with his time and close to a Prudhonian.
His pictorial work presents a freshness of colors and a remarkable grace in the faces and attitudes of the figures. He also painted portraits of Greuzian inspiration, as well as several paintings of ancient or modern history, which he presented primarily at the Salon.
Vallin's works are exhibited at the museums of La Tour (Paris), the Petit Palace, the Louvre, Orsay and the British Museum in London.
