Landscape with Mythological Figures

Oil on panel, 28 x 36 cm – with frame, 43 x 51 cm

The painting depicts a pastoral scene enlivened by mythological figures set against a vast rural landscape. In the center stands a female figure crowned with flowers, draped in a light blue garment billowing in the wind, walking gracefully alongside a winged cherub playing with a bow, while a short distance away, two half-naked maidens sit on a rocky bank near a spring, one of whom is playing the flute. In the background, herds of oxen and goats led by a shepherd enliven the valley, which opens up toward blue-tinged mountains and a sky with golden and pink hues, typical of twilight hours. The composition, arranged in descending planes, alternates vivid splashes of color from the garments with lush natural scenery, featuring a large tree that frames the scene on the right.

The work is fully in keeping with the Arcadian landscape painting style prevalent in the Flemish and Roman regions during the 18th century, when mythological and pastoral themes were reinterpreted as a pretext for creating idyllic vistas, populated by small figures that enliven nature without ever overwhelming it. This balance between mythological narrative and bucolic setting brings the painting close to the work of Victor Honoré Janssens, a Flemish painter active in Brussels and Rome, who made this genre a recurring stylistic hallmark. As in his canvases *Io Recognized by Her Father* and *Bacchus and Ariadne*—both now in private collections—the same care is evident here in blending mythological scenes with rural landscapes populated by herds and shepherds, in a soft, luminous pictorial style with an Arcadian flavor, highly prized by European collectors of the time.
