Historical and critical notes:
The work belongs to the genre of gallant and sensual subjects sought after by the Prague court. The dynamic and crowded composition, the elongated figures with sinuous poses and elegant twists, the rich palette based on blues, pinks, and greens, and the luminous skin tones are distinctive elements of Hans von Aachen’s Mannerist style. Along with Bartholomeus Spranger and Giuseppe Arcimboldo, he was the leading exponent of late Mannerism at the court of Rudolf II, the European center of Mannerist collecting.

A mythological scene depicting The Triumph of Galatea. In the center, the nymph Galatea, dressed in blue and pink drapery, rides on a sea chariot amid nymphs, satyrs, and cherubs who are dancing, playing music, and scattering flowers. Above, two cherubs hold up a green drape like a canopy that frames the scene.
