"Dogon Mali Bombou Toro Statue"
Dogon statues have always seduced collectors with their refined, geometric, almost cubist design, I admit to being a big fan of them too! This one is a beautiful example, everything is straight lines, squares and triangles fitting together to create this harmonious and perfectly successful representation of a venerated female ancestor. It is called bombou toro and comes from the Ogol region, it represents a pregnant woman with her hands folded on her lower abdomen as a sign of protection, they are used in protection rituals for childbirth, which is a time of great danger for women and children! It has a significant black, crusty and greasy patina, a sign of significant sacrificial libation, millet flour, beer, chicken blood... Note that this patina is especially thick on the top of the statue, the face. The pretty headdress is well detailed and the ventral scarifications remain visible under the patina. The peaceful face turned towards the sky, the breasts, symbol of earthly food are very developed, the navel, symbol of the link to the mother and therefore to the earth is prominent (and this is not a coincidence). Height 65 cm with its beautiful base, some cracks and cracks, especially on the base
