Large Miniature On Ivory, 19th Century

Large oval miniature representing a young woman, 3/4 length, seated. Her face is shown in profile. She is looking at a cupid sitting on her knees. The young woman, dressed in an antique tunic, slightly revealing one of her shoulders, is leaning against a marine anchor. This group stands out against a landscaped background. It is an allegorical representation of Hope represented by a young woman with an anchor and Cupid taking an arrow from his quiver. The paint strokes feature large colored flat tints and the shadows are treated with small brown dots. The theme of the miniature underlines the sentimental value of this painting. The miniature is presented in a gilded brass frame.
