Jefferson Tester (1900-1972), American painter, known for his street scenes, landscapes, depictions of nature and rural scenes.
Training: Art Institute of Chicago, San Francisco Art School, student of Sydney Bell and CS Price.
Originally from Oregon, Tester began his career as an artist for The Oregonian. After working for twenty years as a graphic designer for major New York advertising agencies, he then devoted himself entirely to painting, traveling extensively and exhibiting successfully in Mexico, Italy and Paris. Based in southern Europe, he created seven covers for Time magazine as well as covers for the New Yorker, the Saturday Evening Post, etc. In 1963, he returned to Portland and painted until his death. He was the brother of painter Amanda Tester Snyder.
Award: "The Critics Choice" at the 1945 Armory Show
