Indo-portuguese Ivory Mortar, 17th Century
Indo-Portuguese Ivory Mortar, 17th Century
Rare apothecary’s mortar turned from elephant ivory, probably Goa, 17th century. Of slightly flared cylindrical form, it displays a beautiful honey-colored patina and retains the characteristic traces of use of these luxurious utilitarian objects. Produced in the Indo-Portuguese workshops of Goa, such mortars testify to the refinement of ivory craftsmanship under the Portuguese empire and were destined for apothecaries or European cabinets of curiosities.
