On the back of the frame, there are the remains of an old label which indicates an exhibition number (n°113) and which specifies that it is a knife painting. Our painting dates from the 1910s and may be a work by Georges Giraud (1882-1942), a painter born in Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine) who participated in the main Parisian Salons including the Salon des Tuileries in 1929 (sources: Bénézit dictionary of painters and sculptors). From the 1920s, Giraud asserted his art and took care to sign his works in a frank and very personalized manner. Our signature, even if it does not correspond exactly to that used later by the artist, nevertheless has all the characteristics of a future affirmation. While Georges Giraud is known for his paintings of floral arrangements and interior scenes, he did, however, paint rare seascapes.
