Edouard Pail, View Of Ostend, Oil On Canvas, 1883
A seascape depicting the port of Ostend, with a sloop—a large fishing boat commonly found along the Belgian coast—in the foreground, as well as a smaller two-sailed vessel sailing near a pier. In the background, dotted with the masts of sailboats moored in the harbor basin, stands the silhouette of the city, which had become a highly popular seaside resort during the Belle Époque. A misty sky, tinged with a faint orange glow, envelops the scene in a soft, diffused light.
Signed “E. Pail / Ostend 83” in the lower left corner.
Edouard Pail (1851–1916) was a French landscape painter. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nevers, he exhibited regularly at the Salon beginning in 1870. After traveling through Belgium, England, Palestine, Egypt, and Algeria—where he married—he settled in Paris in 1886. A practitioner of plein air painting, his favorite subject was the landscapes of his native Nièvre, and he was associated with the Crozant school, composed of artists who sought to break away from the conventions of academic art by painting from nature.
