"Eugène Courboin , "battle Scene With Horses And Riders", Oil On Canvas, 1894"
Oil on canvas depicting a battle scene with horses and
riders, painted by Eugène Courboin (La Fère 1851 – Paris 1925), a French
illustrator and painter active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The artist, who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts from around 1878, devoted
his work to the academic and historical genres, with particular attention to
detail and a refined style. His paintings range from historical and mythological
scenes to genre subjects, reflecting the artistic trends of his time.
The large-scale canvas measures 132 × 196 cm, with
decorative frame 146 × 210 cm. It is signed and dated lower right “Eug.
Courboin 1894”. The composition shows a landscape with a group of riders in the
foreground and another in the background. On the reverse, a stamp with a
heraldic crest and two stamps bearing the number “120” are visible.
The overall
condition is good; the stretcher appears to have been replaced at a later date.
