Antonio Calderara – “quadrato Intertonali, Alternanze, Contrappunti”, 1970
The work consists of three booklets, each bearing its title on the cover, gathered in a black case. Inside are seven original screen prints by Antonio Calderara accompanied by an unpublished text by Carlo Belloli, published by Lucini in Milan. Each print is signed and numbered on the reverse; the copy presented here is number 7 from an edition of 24.
The three booklets, titled Quadrato Intertonali, Quadrato Alternanze, and Quadrato Contrappunti, form a sequence of variations on the theme of the square module. In each series, Calderara arranges small coloured squares that gradually change according to a precise order: spiral, alternating, and linear. The images unfold as rhythmic and visual variations on the theme of frequency, in dialogue with the accompanying poetic text.
Each booklet contains seven screen prints, for a total of twenty-one. The prints measure 33 × 33 cm, the image 27 × 27 cm, and the case 33.5 × 34 × 3 cm. The prints are in good condition, with minor signs of age and use on the case.
