Preparatory Drawing Pencil On Paper By Théodore Chassériau, C. 1850s

Preparatory drawing executed in pencil and white chalk on paper by the French artist Théodore Chassériau (1819–1856), datable to the early 1850s.

The work depicts the study of a male nude for the painting La Guerre des Gaules (1855), now housed in the Musée d’Art Roger Quilliot in Clermont-Ferrand. The drawing corresponds specifically to the second standing figure from the left in the original composition.

The sheet measures 19 × 30 cm and bears, in the lower right corner, the artist’s blue stamp, a characteristic feature of his graphic production. On the reverse, numerical pencil annotations are present, related to working notes or cataloguing references.

The work retains its original paper support and the authentic traces of the materials used. The surface is overall intact and consistent with the period of execution.
