Oval Carved And Gilt Frame – Bologna, Early 18th Century

Elegant oval frame in carved wood, gilded with gold leaf, made in Bologna in the very early 18th century. It still shows the influence of the late 17th century, with its rich decoration of scrolls and vegetal motifs. The upper part is enriched by a lively and theatrical crest, adorned with volutes and stylised leaves.
Originally conceived as a painting frame, it was later adapted into a mirror with the insertion of a fine mercury glass, most likely contemporary to the frame itself. The piece retains a strong Baroque character, perfectly expressing the decorative taste of Bologna at the beginning of the 18th century.
