Portrait of King Louis XIV (1638–1715) in armor.
This bust portrait of the Sun King at the age of 63 is an 18th-century version after an original by the painter Hyacinthe Rigaud.
Louis XIV is depicted here in three-quarter view, wearing his voluminous wig. He is clad in royal armor adorned with fleur-de-lys and wears a lace jabot around his neck.
Bust portraits of the monarch were often used as diplomatic gifts, but were also commissioned by the nobility as a sign of admiration and devotion to the Sun King.
Oval in format, the portrait is in good condition (with some old restorations). The stretcher is original, though it seems the canvas was relined.
It comes with its original 18th-century frame.
I am selling this portrait in the condition in which I discovered it, leaving it to the buyer to decide whether to undertake further restoration.
