- Philippe de Bourbon (1640 Saint-Germain-en-Laye – 1701 Saint-Cloud) was the younger son of King Charles XIII of France and Queen Anne of Austria. His elder brother was the future King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." At court, he was known as "Monsieur." In 1661, he was married against his will to Henrietta Anne Stuart (Henrietta of England, 1644-1670). His second marriage, beginning in 1671, was to Elisabeth Charlotte, known as Liselotte, of the Palatinate (1652-1722). Philippe d'Orléans became a competent military commander. As early as 1667, he distinguished himself during the War of Devolution in Flanders. That same year, he won an important victory at the Battle of Cassel (in Artois) and obtained the surrender of Saint-Omer.
