Late 18th century Toledo, Spain Reliquary pendant in finely openwork solid silver, depicting the Virgen del Sagrario of Toledo, patron saint of Toledo Cathedral. The Virgin, crowned and wearing a stiff, ornamented mantle, holds the Child Jesus before her, following the iconography specific to this Castilian sanctuary. The openwork in the metal reveals fragments of precious fabrics and papers identifying the relic. The reverse is sealed with gilded paper and an ecclesiastical seal in red wax with an armorial bearing, held in place by green silk threads, guaranteeing the authenticity and integrity of the reliquary. More than a simple object of devotion, this pendant embodies Spanish Baroque piety and the spread of Marian cults throughout Europe, through small portable reliquaries intended to protect the faithful in their daily lives.
