"Monoxyl Box – Carved Wood – Folk Art – Auvergne – Box – Chest – Primitive Art"
Dating: Late 18th century Origin: France – Auvergne - Haute-Loire Single-piece wooden box, carved from the block, decorated with deeply incised geometric decoration. The side walls are punctuated by regular chevrons, motifs found in ancient folk art but also in certain so-called "primitive" expressions, where the ornament is not only aesthetic, but also implicitly symbolic. The sobriety of the form, accentuated by the absence of a lid, gives the object a raw strength and rare intensity. More than a simple container, it embodies an aesthetic of roughness, simplicity and essential gesture. The single-piece character, made from a single block of wood, reinforces the impression of organic solidity and the direct link with living matter. Such boxes could be used for domestic or artisanal storage, but they also reveal an expressive dimension specific to Auvergne folk art: a mixture of utility, sincerity and spontaneity, where each incision translates a carnal relationship with the wood. Condition: deep patina, traces of old wear, visible losses and insect holes, but stable and evocative overall. In its simplicity, this object exudes a singular emotional power, on the border between the object of use and the sculpture of presence.
