Large Reliquary Cross – Reliquary Stand With Cabochon Inlays – Gilded Wood – Relic
France, mid-19th century. Wooden reliquary cross covered with nailed metal decoration, adorned with inlaid colored glass cabochons and faceted glass stones. This piece is characteristic of mid-19th-century French religious production, intended for private devotion or use on a small domestic altar. The obverse features a richly decorated composition, organized around a central oval medallion, currently empty, intended to hold a relic originally protected by a closure (glass or capsule). This central opening confirms its function as a reliquary holder, allowing the insertion of a relic into the heart of the cross. The decoration is completed by radiating metal rays, evoking glory, a symbolic motif common in 19th-century Christian iconography. The arms and shaft are punctuated with red and green cabochons, alternating with clear stones, providing contrast and depth to the whole. The reverse side reveals the wooden structure, the fastening nails, and traces of a now largely worn finish, attesting to its long history and authentic patina. This reliquary cross illustrates a form of domestic piety where the spiritual function is accompanied by a marked decorative concern, without resorting to precious materials, but with a genuine pursuit of visual effect.
