"Paintings, Jules, René Hervé"
Jules René Hervé (1887 - 1981), French artist, became a fairly important figure in the 20th century art world. He was born in Langres, Haute-Marne. His uncle was a drawing teacher. He chose to leave for Paris in 1908 to study at the School of Decorative Arts. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1910 and began teaching the following year. He received several medals (including a gold one at the 1925 Salon). During the Great War, he was mobilized. He resumed his career in 1925 by traveling to Europe to meet other artists, discover new works and find inspiration. He exhibited in Belfort and Langres with several artists including Jules Adler, with whom he had artistic similarities. He won a gold medal at the 1937 World's Fair and was then elected vice-president of the Salon des artistes français. Faced with the novelty of the works in the Salons and on the art market at the time, and not wanting to innovate artistically, he simply chose to withdraw from artistic life and returned to Langres where he would end his days.
