Édouard Marcel Sandoz was born on March 21, 1881, in Basel, Switzerland. He was the son of Édouard Sandoz, the founder of the chemical and then pharmaceutical company Sandoz (now Novartis). He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Antonin Mercié and Jean-Antoine Injalbert. Sandoz is best known for his numerous porcelain boxes, bottles, carafes, and tea and coffee sets. He worked with a variety of materials, including marble, bronze, and ceramics. His style owes much to Art Nouveau. He was particularly interested in animal sculpture, particularly fennec foxes and rabbits, of which he created numerous representations. [ref. needed] He founded the French Society of Animal Artists in 1933. His commitment to serving his fellow artists led him to chair the Taylor Foundation, created by Isidore Justin Séverin Taylor, for nearly twenty years. He created the Work of the Children of Artists and participated in the creation of the Cité des Arts in Paris. Sandoz was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts of the Institut de France.
