Undated [1941 or 1942] Portrait of a figure smoking a cigarette; probably that of the writer and journalist André David (1899-1988) whose address in Beverly Hills was noted by Saint-Exupéry at the top of the page: “23 South Reeves Drive Beverly Hills California”. André David had founded the “Conférences des Ambassadeurs” to promote French culture. At the start of the Second World War, he was able to take refuge in the United States where he directed the Institut Français founded in Hollywood by Charles Boyer. In the margin of the drawing, Saint-Exupéry wrote his name and his New York address: “St Ex 240 Central P[ark]”.
