Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1908, Otto Klar studied at the Wiener Kunstakademie (Academy of Fine Arts Vienna). He exhibited his works in Vienna, Berlin, and Munich before emigrating to South Africa in 1939, on the eve of World War II. Klar settled in Pretoria, where he continued to paint and gave art classes—Alice Goldin studied there. He is famous for his rural landscapes, seascapes, and still lifes of beautiful bouquets in vases. In the 1950s and 1960s, he also produced several Abstract Expressionist works. In 1962, Klar was appointed an honorary professor by the President of the Austrian State.
His works are included in local collections such as the Pretoria Art Museum, the Ann Bryant Art Gallery in East London, the Durban Art Gallery and the Witwatersrand Art Museum in Johannesburg.
