"Jean-louis Durel : Rare Pair Of Solid Silver Candlesticks Normandy Granville 1751-54"
A pair of Louis XV period Normandy solid silver candlesticks from the very rare Bureau de GRANVILLE with monogrammed octagonal bases. Shafts, knots and sockets in the model. Pair of very well hallmarked torches with the Hallmarks of the Common House of COUTANCES (with the Crowned C) to which Granville was attached, the Hallmark of the Common House (letter date M Crowned) for COUTANCES-GRANVILLE circa 1751-54 and Hallmarks of the Master Goldsmith Jean-LouisDUREL (Hallmark with the initials "JLD" and a hand holding a dagger) received to practice in Granville in 1751, he gave up his activity in 1754. Cassan's work, probably given the rarity of the pieces of this Bureau, was unable to establish the relationship between letters, dates and vintage, fortunately the very narrow period of practice of Durel allows us to date very precisely between November 1751 and September 1754. We do not know / few shaped pieces of this bureau apart from a pair of Granville Torches from the Mo Antoine Fontaine which was part of the personal collection of Claude Cassan. Pair of Louis XV period candlesticks from the very rare Bureau de Granville in very good condition and remarkably hallmarked, of beautiful quality and with a superb patina, micro-scratches of use. For informed collector and Museum quality given its great rarity ....
Note that we find the different (hand holding a dagger) in the Master Goldsmith's Hallmark in the Arms of the City of Granville that Charles VII attributed to him (with the intention of the city being armed day and night for its defense). Do not take into account the reflections on the photos. Height: 22.5 cm Total weight: 875 grams
