Watercolour On Paper, Signed Giovanni Servi – Interior Scene With Pope Granting Investiture

Artist: Giovanni Servi
Giovanni Servi (1795/1800 – 1885)Watercolour on paper, signed and dedicatedDimensions: 57 × 43 cm (painting); 80 × 67 cm (with frame)Italy, second half of the 19th century
Elegant watercolour signed “Gio Servi” in the lower left corner, accompanied by a handwritten dedication, attributable with good certainty to the Venetian painter Giovanni Servi, active in Milan and renowned for his historical-romantic compositions inspired by emblematic events of Italian and European history.
Executed with a fluid and luminous technique, the work depicts an interior scene likely set in a papal palace, as confirmed by the visible papal coat of arms (tiara and crossed keys) placed above a prominent portal in the background. At the centre of the composition, a seated Pope in white robes is shown signing or handing over a document to a young nobleman dressed in an elegant Renaissance-style outfit, accompanied by a cleric or ecclesiastical figure. The solemn gesture, the sword resting on the Pope’s knees, and the ceremonial arrangement of the figures suggest a moment of official investiture, possibly of military or diplomatic nature.
Two background figures – a man and a woman – appear to be observing the event. The decor includes wall furnishings and paintings, one of which shows Christ walking on water, highlighting the spiritual and symbolic dimension of the scene.
The piece appears to be a finished sketch or preparatory study, with clearly visible pencil lines and some areas deliberately left unfinished, especially in the faces and garments. This choice enhances the intimate and narrative character of the composition.
Condition reportOverall condition: fair. Signs of moisture and staining, especially along the borders and under the passe-partout, likely caused by rising humidity. Some areas of the paper show slight darkening or oxidation.A conservation treatment is recommended, including replacement of the passe-partout with acid-free materials and evaluation by a paper restoration specialist.
FrameOriginal period frame in gilded and moulded wood, in good general condition. Total framed dimensions: 80 × 67 cm.
