Object description :

" German-bavarian School / 19th Century / South German Or Swiss-german School"
A charming genre scene depicting an Alpine peasant interior, located between Bavaria and German-speaking Switzerland, and executed with great naturalistic precision. Signed lower right (illegible), this work is part of the tradition of 19th-century rural realism, close to the late Biedermeier movement. A lively and animated scene: In a common room with whitewashed walls and exposed beams, a woman is busy near the hearth. She wears a white headdress, a fitted bodice, a black apron with a red belt, and a striped skirt: typical clothing of 19th-century Bavarian or Swiss peasant women. A man enters, wearing white breeches, a waistcoat, a loose shirt, and a large black hat, accompanied by a well-groomed young boy. A small dog leaps happily toward them. The whole gives off an atmosphere that is both warm and orderly, typical of the Germanic domestic ideal. Remarkable ethnographic richness: The painting is full of details that bear witness to daily life on German-speaking Alpine farms. Among the objects depicted: A vertical wooden butter churn, emblematic of the dairy autonomy of peasant households. Hanging ears of corn, root vegetables (carrots, turnips, onions), rustic bread: all elements of the local diet. Glazed stoneware crockery, glass bottles, cooking pots, cutlery, and ceramic pots. Sieves, baskets, baskets, buckets, agricultural tools, hanging laundry, coats, and tea towels. Rustic furniture: benches, stools, an armchair, a small set table. A brick fireplace with a textile hood, typical of Alpine interiors. Each element is painted with care, in a documentary spirit that gives the work both artistic and ethnographic value. 60 x 75 without frame 63 x 78 with frame The work, relined, has benefited from discreet professional restoration and is now in excellent exhibition condition. It can be hung as is, ready to be admired.

Volkers“ (or „Volkerts“) signiert. There you have: Vertical Butterfass (Butterfass aus Holz) – zentrales Utensil der alpine Milchwirtschaft.
