Boris Buchet (1917–1999) / Still Life With A Bowl / Year 1960 / Oil On Canvas
Artist: Boris Buchet (1917–1999)
This oil on canvas, created in 1960 by Boris Buchet, is part of a figurative tradition firmly anchored in the 20th century. It demonstrates a concern for balance, clarity, and harmony of volumes. On a varnished table with subtle reflections, the artist carefully arranges a white bowl edged in blue, garlic cloves, an onion, a lemon, a glazed jar, and a glass pot covered with fabric, all placed on a blue-gray background enhanced by a pink cloth that softens the composition. The controlled light gives relief to the objects while emphasizing their materiality. The brushwork remains measured, without excess, in a post-Cézannian style that favors the construction of forms and the highlighting of textures.

Boris Buchet (1917–1999) Figurative painter – School of Paris – 20th century Born in Paris in 1917, Boris Buchet is a French painter of Franco-Russian origin, whose artistic career is part of the figurative tradition of the 20th century, with a particular attachment to the spirit of the School of Paris. Coming from a cultured background — his father being French and his mother of Russian origin — he was immersed very early in an artistic environment open to modern trends from Eastern Europe and Montparnasse. He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the studio of the painter Jean Souverbie, an influential figure in post-war modernized classicism and a former member of the Cubist group of artists. Under his direction, Boris Buchet developed a pictorial language based on the construction of forms, respect for volumes, and the search for balance in composition. His work is mainly structured around still life, portraiture, and a few interior scenes. Cézanne's legacy can be seen in the structuring of space and the modeling of objects, as well as a certain post-impressionist softness in the treatment of light and color. His brushwork is measured, sometimes graphic, always attentive to legibility. Active since the 1940s, Boris Buchet participated in various Parisian Salons, notably the Salon des Indépendants, where he rubbed shoulders with other artists of the modernist figurative vein. He produced numerous oils on canvas depicting everyday objects, bouquets of flowers, fruit or kitchen utensils, which he enhanced with precise and silent staging, in the manner of painters in the classical tradition.
