Circa 1850
Morocco
A half wedding belt from Fez called Hizam. Woven on a handloom, it features four Hispano-Moorish decorations including cashmere palmettes. At the ends, there is an eight-pointed star "seal of Solomon" and a "Khamsa" hand, commonly the hand of Fatima, intended to remove the evil eye! On the back, we appreciate the mottled weave of the brocade. Note rare micro-stains and some missing fringes. Preserved colors. Stable state of conservation.
Dimensions: 21 cm wide by 214 cm long and fringes 60 cm.
