Gabriel De Cool (1854–1930) – Farm In The Sun, Original Pastel Under Glass

Pastel on paper, signed lower left, depicting a light-filled rural scene: a stone house under a slate roof, typical of the French countryside, in a peaceful and luminous atmosphere. The line is precise, the composition balanced, and the tones perfectly mastered. The work is presented under glass in its original antique frame, a classic and conservative mounting for pastels in order to preserve the pigments from dust and humidity. Gabriel de Cool (1854–1930), a student of Jules Lefebvre, exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1880, where he was awarded a 3rd class medal in 1889. He specialized in genre scenes, portraits, and landscapes, with a style that is both sensitive and rigorous. His pastels are rarer than his oils, and highly sought after for their freshness and finesse of execution. On the back, a handwritten note from the time is still present, giving precise instructions for hanging the painting without damaging the pastel mounting. This detail reinforces the authenticity and the care taken in the conservation of the work.
