A very fine late 18th century portrait of a noble young lady by the renowned British artist Sir William Beechey. Although the identity of the sitter is unknown, she is adorned in sumptuous fabrics which illustrate her highly respected position in society. Her gaze is directed towards the viewer, drawing them in to the wonderful composition.
The painting has a very good provenance having been sold by Christie’s in their British Pictures of the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries sale in February 1990. It has a Christie's stencil to the verso. This portrait is a lovely work by a highly collectable artist. The record at auction for a painting by Sir Thomas Beechey is USD 821,000 achieved on 29th January 2014 at Christie's New York.
Condition report: In very fine condition. Professionally lined and conserved in the 20th century. The left stretcher line is showing slightly. There is craquelure throughout the painting commensurate with its significant age. The canvas is in good tension and the paint surface is even and stable. It is clean, most attractive, well framed and ready to hang
Sir William Beechey was one of the leading lights of 18th-century British portraiture. A student of Johan Zoffany, Beechey entered the London Royal Academy in 1772, where he exhibited his colourful, lively portraits, throughout his highly successful career. A favourite of the fashionable elite, Beechey was named portrait painter to Queen Charlotte in 1793. His work for the royal family in the following years culminated in the great group portrait King George III Reviewing the Dragoons (London, Royal Collection), for which he was awarded knighthood.
