The present work is a wonderfully characterful and skilfully executed 17th century Dutch portrait of a woman holding a black feather fan. Dressed in typical clothing of the period, she wears a black dress with white lace cuffs and a white shawl with lace edges and a black bow. On her head she wears a black bonnet with black lace edges. Her hands are elegantly placed one upon another with her left hand loosely holding a black feather fan. The gaze of the sitter is directed straight at the viewer, her eyes full of character. It could be the work of one of several renowned Dutch painters of the period and is worthy of further study.
