Antoine Bouvard (1870-1955) - Oil on canvas - View of VeniceOil on canvas depicting a view of VeniceSigned lower right: BouvardCirca 1930 Antoine Bouvard (1870–1956), also known by the pseudonyms Marc Aldine or Bouvard Senior, was a French painter widely recognized for his cityscapes, particularly his scenes of Venice, bathed in a peaceful, golden light. Antoine Bouvard's real name was Eloi Noël Beraud, although he chose to paint under the pseudonyms "Bouvard" and "Marc Aldine." Bouvard's paintings reveal the influence of the artist Félix Ziem, whom he met during one of his many trips to Venice, and show his instinctive understanding of the light that is so characteristic of the city. His paintings depict the romantic and serene side of the city, and it is this sensitive image of the city of Dosges that made the artist famous. His paintings demonstrate his architectural talent and also reflect his love for the light effects unique to Venice. Bouvard's works are painted in an intimate style, capturing all the charm of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. His popularity remains intact today and places him among the most recognized and respected painters of Venetian subjects. The artist's son, George Noel Beraud (1912-1972), was also an artist and painted under the name George Noel Bouvard. Born in Paris and died in Ecouen, he painted subjects in the same style as his father. On view at the Galerie Courcelles Antiquités, at 97 rue de Courcelles, in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.
