A large, fine and very beautiful 18th century French / Swiss School oil on canvas painting depicting a Regency period lady in an elegant blue dress. The lady is holding a book with hand-written French script in one hand. The painting has lovely tonality and an almost pastel-like softness to the brushwork. A fine quality work from an accomplished hand. The work is close to the soft portraits of Jean-Étienne Liotard (1702-1789) and in our opinion further research is required on this painting which is of a very fine quality.

Jean-Étienne Liotard (1702-1789 was a Genevan painter, art connoisseur and dealer. He is best known for his detailed, strikingly naturalistic portraits in pastel, and for the works from his stay in Turkey. A Huguenot of French origin he was born and died in Geneva, but spent most of his career in stays in the capitals of Europe. His portraits display a certain softness and distinctness of the eyes which the portrait we are offering also shows.

Condition report: The painting has been professionally restored at some point and is in excellent condition for its age with minimal visual craquelure. Any retouching has been generally well- blended. The canvas is in good tension and the paint surface is stable. There are no patch repairs to the verso. In our opinion this lovely portrait is ready to hang on the wall.
