Kirk & Son was founded by Samuel Kirk in 1815. It is renowned for having introduced the repoussé technique to American silversmithing. During the 1820s and 1840s, he developed a floral repoussé motif inspired by Indian silverwork, which became known as "Baltimore Silver."
This silversmith was also known for using imported coins from other countries as raw materials until 1896.
This box is a fine example of his work, with its embossed flower motif and the use of coin silver.
The "11oz" hallmark was used from 1890 to 1896 and indicates that the box was made from coins with a fineness of 11/12, or 916/°°.
S. Kirk & Son boxes with this typical decoration are relatively rare; the bulk of their production was table silverware.
