Staff Officer's Saber Mle Vendémiaire Year XII
Saber of the Staff Officers and Aides-de-Camp of the model defined by the regulations of the 1st Vendémiaire Year XII. Rather than a long description, we refer to the description and the representation plates attached to the regulations.
The saber presented is in all respects similar to the model, but a little more luxurious. Indeed, in addition to the damask blade, the loop bracelets are of the model of the General Officers with the two intertwined laurel wreaths.
Twisted ebony handle. Cap with a short tail decorated with a plant wreath. Guard branch pierced for the passage of the dragonne. Body knot decorated with an antique trophy. Earpiece in the shape of a shield decorated with an acanthus leaf. Curved quillon with lion's head.
Curved damask blade with single hollow side and counter-edge with a cartouche decorated with gilded cabalistic signs in the "return from Egypt" style.
"Bronzed" iron scabbard. Cup, bail bracelets and rivet are in gilded brass. Characteristic dart, elegantly carved with foliage.
This weapon is in very good condition. It has retained its tanning and a good part of its gilding.
Regulations of the 1st Vendémiaire Year 12: it is published by Magimel, bookseller for military art, quai des Augustins N° 73. It describes in an extremely precise way the uniform and equipment of the General Officers and the numerous members of the General Staff. It includes, in the appendix, plates engraved by Adam of remarkable finesse. In the chapter on the sabre of the Staff Officers, the regulation is succinct ("the Assistants to the Staff, the Aides de Camp....will be armed on horseback with a half-curved sabre, the handle of which will be in ebony, the fittings in gilded copper, the scabbard in bronzed iron."), but the appended plates are extremely precise.
