Large embossed brass ceremonial platter, after Jean Goujon (1510-1567), 19th century
Octagonal in shape with a base set back from the rim, this platter is decorated with Renaissance-inspired motifs. The center of the platter depicts the Nymph of the Seine, based on a stone bas-relief long attributed to Jean Goujon: seated on a vessel floating on the waves, a nude nymph holds fleurs-de-lis in her left hand. On either side of the rim, the platter features two nymphs pouring water from an amphora, taken from Jean Goujon's sculptures on the Fontaine des Innocents in Paris. The upper and lower parts of the rim are adorned with a garland of plants and two cherub heads.
Good overall condition, with some holes and cracks (see photos). A hanging loop on the back.
