Pair Of Altar Angels – Late 16th Century
https://www.instagram.com/lejardindesmoines/At four hundred years old, our two venerable wooden angels with long hair, sculpted in the round, were originally polychromed. Slender and with the austerity necessary for the solemnity of their function, they are complementary elements, guardians of the same altar. The first of our angels is a ceremonial angel because he carries a candlestick and thus offers the Light.
He barely dominates his sidekick because Light prevails over all things. The second one, in fact, carries a horn of plenty, an inexhaustible source of blessings.
They both have a beautiful presence, despite the ravages of the centuries and the naivety of their creation, which only makes them more endearing.
It is probably a Spanish work from the end of the 16th century.
Dimensions of respectively 48 and 50 cm in height - width 12 cm and depth 10 cm.
Condition of use - Losses - traces of wood-eating and restoration.
