The Court Of Miracles, Drawing, 19th

"La Cour des Miracles", graphite drawing circa 1850, signed LJ ?
This small drawing, entitled "La cour des Miracles" is closer to a Bacchanal... Many characters, some are watching, others are dancing, musicians are playing guitar, tambourines and castanets, a Spanish atmosphere. The treatment is vigorous and gives an impression of movement and gaiety. The women dance, barefoot, one thinks of Carmen... little dwarves are in the foreground accompanying the dance. Note the little dogs... learned.
This fashionable subject was treated by artists of the same period, Daumier, Granville and the initials of the author are to be discovered. Very good condition, well framed by a pitch pine wood, this drawing is in its composition the expression of the freedom conquered in the second part of the 19th century.
