Artist: D.charles Fouqueray 1869-1956
Mixed-media drawing by D. Charles Fouqueray (1869–1926)
This drawing by Charles Fouqueray (1869–1926), official painter of the French Navy, depicts a scene from the Battle of Dixmude in 1914.In the early days of World War I, in the Belgian city of Dixmude, Belgian soldiers, supported by French marines and Senegalese riflemen, heroically resisted the German advance for several weeks.Despite the near-total destruction of the city and heavy casualties, their resistance slowed the enemy and helped stabilize the front. This battle became a symbol of courage and sacrifice and a significant date in the history of the French marines.
